The University Libraries will award $500 to the best undergraduate research project of 2011

The deadline is approaching for the University Libraries' undergraduate research award. Submit your project by March 1.

For the third year, the University Libraries will give a prize of $500 in recognition of an outstanding undergraduate project that best demonstrates the ability to locate, select, and synthesize information from library resources and uses those resources in the creation of an original research project. Any paper or project completed by an undergraduate, or a group of undergraduates, for a course in the Spring, Summer, or Fall semesters of 2011 is eligible.

University Libraries Closed 2/19/12 at 7pm

Due the the approaching weather system and the anticipation of poor conditions overnight, Jackson Library will close at 7 PM on Sunday night and will NOT be open for 24/5 services. Music Library will also close at 7 PM instead of 10. Campus police are reporting slick conditions on campus at this time and the local weather information is anticipating worsening conditions throughout the night. The campus is considered operating normally at this time but we are closing due to overnight operations, please refer to the campus information system, http://spartanalert.uncg.edu/ for information related to Monday morning.

CAP providing free coffee and hot chocolate in Jackson Library on Thursday, February 16 from 11 am-1 pm

Opportunities for Graduate Students and Faculty at the Folger Institute

UNCG recently joined the prestigious Folger Institute consortium. Through this new membership, UNCG’s faculty and graduate students have preferred application status for all of the Folger Institute programs. These include weekend conferences, symposia, semester-length seminars and skills courses, multi-session weekend seminars, and multi-session colloquia. Click here for an early peek at the slate of programs for 2012-2013, which includes offerings on the culture of early modern cities, sexuality and theater, teaching the history of the book, political theory under the British Empire, MA-level library research methods, early modern women's pedagogies, and religion and the writing of Atlantic World natural history.

If UNCG graduate students or faculty are accepted to these programs, all registration fees are waived. Plus, they are eligible for travel and lodging grants-in-aid to attend. These affiliate benefits apply to tenure-line faculty at all levels, and to graduate students, PhD and MA both.

Free Copies of the New York Times Available in Jackson Library

Thanks to Undergraduate Studies, free copies of the New York Times are now available in Jackson Library. The stand is located near the entrance to the Reading Room, across from the New Books shelf. Papers will be delivered daily during the week and are available for free to anyone who would like to take one. Several offices within Undergraduate Studies have been working as partners with the New York Times in the First Year Program this academic year, and Jackson Library was identified as a good location to distribute newspapers.

In a hurry? Use the new self checkout station in Jackson Library to grab a book and go.

At the beginning of the Spring Semester, we installed a new self checkout station near the College Avenue entrance to Jackson Library. Patrons may check out books at this station or at the one at the Checkout Desk located by the EUC Connector. Continue to use the Checkout Desk for DVDs, laptops, iPads, and other technology.

Alternative resources when Wikipedia goes dark.

Wikipedia has announced that it will shut down for 24 hours beginning 12:00 am, EST, on Wednesday, January 18. Wikipedia is taking the action to protest the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill. For more information about Wikipedia's decision, check out its founder's statement.

The University Libraries offer many resources that can provide you with the reference help you need for the next 24 hours, or anytime. Two to try:

Gale Virtual Reference Library. This resource provides the full text of many encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, and directories, across all subjects.

Oxford Reference. This multi-subject resource provides the full text of over 175 reference books, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, "who's who", literary companions, and handbooks.

University Libraries Will Be Closed on Monday, January 16

Both Jackson Library and the Music Library will be closed on Monday, January 16th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

On Friday, January 13, Jackson Library will close at 7:00 PM, and the Music Library will close at its regular time, 6:00 PM. On Saturday, January 14, both Jackson and the Music Library are open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On Sunday, January 15, Jackson opens at 1:00 PM and closes at 7:00 PM. The Music Library will operate from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Jackson Library will resume its normal hours starting Tuesday, January 17 at 7:30 AM. The Music Library will also resume its normal schedule and open at 7:45 AM.

Inaugural Issue of The Journal of Learning Spaces Published

The University Libraries are pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of The Journal of Learning Spaces. A peer-reviewed, open-access journal published biannually, The Journal of Learning Spaces provides a scholarly, multidisciplinary forum for research articles, case studies, book reviews, and position pieces related to all aspects of learning space design, operation, pedagogy, and assessment.

Head of Access Services, Joe Williams, is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. The first issue includes articles on engaging the You Tube generation, increasing interaction in college classrooms, and the Noel Center for Academic Creativity at Eastern Kentucky University.

Congratulations to the University Libraries' Joe Williams, Richard Cox, Kathy Crowe, Mike Crumpton, Jenny Dale, and Beth Filar Williams for launching the new journal. Several other staff and faculty members at UNCG contributed to the founding of The Journal of Learning Spaces, including Anthony Chow, Curtis Erwin, Patrick Lee Lucas, Beth Martin, Ray Purdom, and Guy Sanders.
